Features

Everything a paper needs.
Nothing it doesn’t.

Seven things Writer does well, from the first \documentclass to the camera-ready PDF.

01 Compile

The compiler lives in your browser.

TeX Live, compiled to WebAssembly, runs on your own machine. There are no queues, no quotas and no timeouts, and your drafts never leave your laptop to be built.

  • pdfLaTeX and XeLaTeX, with BibTeX and makeindex
  • Packages download on demand, then stay cached
  • Auto-compile as you type, or on ⌘S
$ Load TeX engine (cached)
$ pdflatex main.tex
$ bibtex main
$ pdflatex (rerun for refs)

No compile quotas. No timeouts. Your drafts never leave your machine to be built.

02 Collaborate

Write together, live.

Everyone sees each other’s cursors, by name. Leave comments on the exact sentence, propose edits in suggest mode, and keep the conversation in project chat.

  • Owner, editor, commenter and viewer roles
  • Suggestions with accept and reject
  • Share by email invite or link

03 AI co-author

A co-author who read the manual.

Bring your own Claude key, or any OpenAI-compatible provider. It sees your whole project, and every edit it makes arrives as a diff you approve.

  • Ghost-text completions, accepted with Tab
  • ⌘K rewrites with a word-level diff
  • Real citations from Crossref, and image → LaTeX

Fix this error Find a real citation Whiteboard → LaTeX ⌘K rewrite

04 PDF

Click the PDF, land on the line.

Two-way SyncTeX. Double-click anywhere in the PDF to jump to its source, or send your cursor’s line to the exact spot on the page.

  • Double-click PDF → source
  • ⌥⇧L source → PDF
  • Dark-mode PDF, zoom, page jump

Every version, kept.

Writer snapshots your project as you work. Compare any version with today, restore one file or the whole project, and label the ones that matter.

  • Automatic versions with per-file diffs
  • One-click restore
  • Labels that are kept forever

06 Git & import

Git, if you’re into that.

Error messages, translated

We speak fluent TeX error.

TeX’s error messages were written in 1978, and it shows. Writer turns them into plain English, points at the line, and can fix it for you.

What TeX says

! Missing $ inserted.
<inserted text>
$
l.42 The learning rate \alpha
{} is set to 0.01.

What Lexiq says

Line 42: \alpha only works in math mode. Wrap it in dollar signs and TeX will stop yelling.

−The learning rate \alpha is set to 0.01.
+The learning rate $\alpha$ is set to 0.01.

Go on, type some math.

Edit the LaTeX below and watch it typeset as you type. This little demo runs KaTeX. Writer runs a real TeX engine, and it’s about this snappy.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people ask us most. Anything else, ask the AI. It read the manual.

  • Yes. Unlimited projects, in-browser compiling and real-time collaboration with up to five people per project cost nothing. Paid plans add more collaborators and AI that works without your own key.
